The Art of Designing Your Kitchen – Part V: Backsplashes & Appliances

If your stove or your refrigerator could talk! What stories would they tell? Midnight snacking, special meals for kids, frozen casseroles and fresh baked cookies for Santa… The kitchen is central to creating the story of your home. Besides your bedroom, where you spend eight hours (if your lucky!) each night sleeping, or the couch if your a couch potato (which I am definitely NOT!) you have probably spent more hours in the kitchen than you could count. It is especially important to me to stress this with my clients and point out just how important it is to really pay attention to every last detail when designing this space. In this comprehensive series, I am walking you step by step through my own process I use with my clients. We are having fun now and today we get to pick out our appliances and look at what kind of backsplash you might want to create. Backsplashes The space between the countertop and cabinets is referred to as the backsplash and can be a place to offer some real design aesthetic. Small glass tiles are popular. Subway tile is also trending right now. It is also quite nice to do a feature backsplash behind a stove. Depending on the choice of tile or stone, there is also design opportunity with the direction that the stone is laid. Appliances Today’s appliances cannot help but lean a little on the contemporary side. Stainless still seems to be the finish of choice. If the finish on stainless tends to be a little harsh for your old world kitchen then consider having your appliances faced with your cabinetry. There is a plethora of products on the market now and many at competitive pricing. Consider shopping around pretty intently on this aspect of the kitchen as you can save some real dollars here just by educating yourself on what is available. I will post the last step in this series next week! Get ready for my favorite part! How to personalize!
