From the KHI Retail Studio - Home for the Holidays Part II
Silver Bells, Silver Bells… or, maybe you prefer red or purple! While you may not think you are ready to “O Christmas Tree” just yet, may I politely remind you about years past when you waited until December to think about your holiday decorating and it put you into “Grinch” mode during the most wonderful time of the year? Well, that was me a few years ago when I waited too long to put my holiday best on my home and I have taken a vow to never to it again! And with that vow comes the lesson now learned from me to you and how you can rock around your Christmas Tree smiling away as your friends and family wonder just how you pulled it all together. Planning darlings! Lists and planning! In my first post I focused on drawing your attention in on the main rooms your holiday decor will affect, making a (wish) list for each room, perhaps doing some research on Pinterest and also exploring a holiday color palate. We will go into a bit more detail here as what I have found with many of my clients is that with the early stages of planning for holiday comes a few “larger” design choices as well that will last beyond your new years resolution.
Pull Out Your Neutrals
For those of you who have been doing this for a long time, you might already be pulling out your neutrals. For those of you new to the game, you may be wondering what I mean! Seasons call for a change in fabrics – and the holidays are perfect to pull in some more toned down neutrals simply because you will be dressing them up for the holidays ahead. Halloween and the welcoming of fall in October, Thanksgiving in November and Christmas in December, you want your foundation to be a perfect base for all three of these. You don’t want to be changing out a rug on Black Friday, believe me! Make those larger changes (if that is in your plan and budget) NOW. If you have any inkling of a desire to see a fresh coat of paint in the dining room, do it now!
Warm and Cozy
Texture can bring instant warmth to a space. Like I mentioned above, earth tone colors are fab for fall. What am I loving right now with the cooler weather? Faux fur pillows! They will be relevant all season long and great for afternoon naps after big meals. Another fabric I love for holiday is velvet. This might be more appropriate in a a formal sitting room, but nothing says holiday luxury like a few velvet throw pillows.
Fabric – What’s Hot for Fall?
If you want to make a larger change to your room – and you are taking my advice and doing it NOW so all of the dust settles when you are ready to jingle bells – I wanted to share the hot fabrics for fall and what we have been seeing a lot of in our retail studio.
The suzani medallion motif is a very popular and classic pattern. From rugs to pillows to draperies – you can find this pattern in almost any color and it’s “fun yet classy and not-so-traditional” is great for someone who just wants to lighten up the energy of a space.
Houndstooth could be one of my favorite fabrics to bring out for holiday. Quilts, chairs or if you are really daring – a tree skirt – it is always a classic and for some reason, fits well with the season.
